Yeah ESXi does the e1000 or the VMXNET3 (AMD 79c970). Both work really well in the out of box Untangle distribution.

If you're seeing random issues with lockups and the network interfaces randomly "dropping" it is because you have the management interface for VMWare on the same adapter that is moving VM Packets. You MUST separate these two functions if you want the device to be stable. Yes, this means 3 interfaces if you want to use Untangle. Well... unless you use a UT router to defend the VMs themselves... then you can get away with 2 interfaces and an extra virtual switch that isn't attached to a physical adapter.

I already do that, even though I did not know that.

This is how it is set up.

Right now there is not middle switch, it is just UT from WAN swtich to LAN switch.

As far as hardware goes, I have 2 Intergrated NICs in the server for the managment interface and iSCSI only. Then I have a Quad port card with 3 ports dedicated to the LAN and 1 to the WAN.

Though a may go back to the way like in the picture, for VPN reasons.

Well, I have a quad port adapter in one my my UT servers that loves to power itself off if you put too much network traffic through it...

It's a SuperMicro PCIEx card with 4 Intel 82571EB interfaces.

    Is that so?

That might explain why my one UT VM went off the grid all the sudden like it did the one time. Though there was barely any traffic running through it, there was just my idle workstation.

At the risk of sounding like a smart #$%.

Yeah... but it's used in all sorts of software development.

I just wish I had a card to FREAKING TEST WITH. All the equipment I have of that class is either in mission critical service, or sold to clients. I don't have something loose I can just play with.
I got a Pro 1000 PT quad port bypass card you can play with. If you pay the shipping ill send it to you.
