    Hardware can cause anything, but without specifics on what you're trying to use we can't suggest anything.

    Check the BIOS, if the device is running on a SATA hard disk, your SATA controller may have a RAID/AHCI/IDE option. Make sure said option is set to IDE. Beyond that, I'm not sure what is up.

    The only other thing I can think of, is that you're on an old PII, that needs the 586 kernel, and I don't think we have a 586 kernel anymore. We have 686 and AMD64.

    *Edit* My memory is off the 686 is the PII, the 586 was the Pentium and Pentium Pro. But still, what are you trying to install on?
