Oh cmon... where is your sense of adventure!

Rebooting a server in the middle of a massive update script, kernel replacement, and general update is always a good idea. Right?

Yep, which is why I'm not rebooting or powering off the server...
But, it's still just sitting at ...

    cc -c -D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -DDEBIAN -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -I/usr/local/include -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -O2 -g -DVERSION=\"1.0\" -DXS_VERSION=\"1.0\" -fPIC "-I/usr/lib/perl/5.10/CORE" scanner8.c

... for over half an hour (possibly much longer... when is the update scheduled? Sometime in the middle of the night - it's 2:31 in the afternoon now)

Yes, its compiling the spamassassin code. If your CPU isn't fast it can take a while.

Whenever you had it scheduled in config->upgrade->upgrade settings.
If you hit the upgrade button by hand it doesn't matter when its scheduled.

It is using default update settings, which is why I asked. I only logged in now and noticed it ... if it's set to update at 11pm or midnight... this upgrade has been going for a while.

If I had seen some progress, I wouldn't have even asked, I would have just waited, but it's still sitting as it was... Hasn't gotten up to scanner9.c yet.

Well then it may have already been rebooted.
I'd drop to terminal run 'top' and 'uptime'

top doesn't have any processes using much cpu; highest is mongrel_rails at about 10-15%, uptime shows 14 days.

I just realised how much I have hijacked this thread.

If one of the mods wants to grab my posts and split them into a new thread, that would be great!

That means it hasn't rebooted yet, that's good.

That's (at least) 2 hours there with no change, and according to top, not much happening...

Time to be concerned, or just wait for tomorrow?

... Update ... no update. 6hrs now since I first looked at the screen... no change.
