Would a failed GRUB install be classed as an incomplete installation?

If my understanding of Untangle's installation process is complete, no... the boot loader is the last thing done before reboot. So I cannot explain why a corruption of the boot loader would corrupt anything else, nor would I expect it to.

Then I am lost, the only thing that failed during the install was GRUB. I had no other errors during install.

I'm just going to have to wait for UEFI support!

Just curious: could you get around this by embedding Untangle in ESXi?

Yes, but that's an Atom based board... I'm not sure it's got the headroom for that.

You might try using clover boot loader. Search sourcefordge for it. Put it on a usb only to boot from.

Its not the minerals to run ESXi and Untangle. Only 2GB of RAM and a fairly low power CPU.

The boot loader you found fixed the boot problem, what's left is something else. I'd try the install again using different media. Another thing you can do is install Untangle on another platform, and move hard disk over then smack it with the alternate boot loader you found.
