Question 500 Internal Server Error: lost GUI access. Help....

    Hi,

When trying to reach Untangle via the internal network I get the following error message:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator at [no address given] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Unit is running fine ( I have internet access and webfilter blocking of certain websites still works) but I just cannot access it anymore.

In the weeks before I have had some issues with memory running full and I already reduced the retention of logfiles to 3-4 days to avoid running out of memory ( BTW: I am running a u25 appliance).
I thought this retention reduction worked since I got rid of the warning emails but now I cannot even reach Untangle anymore. And I do not get any warning email either.
I do not know for sure whether memory problems are related to the current situation but it is al least suspicious.
I am afraid to give it a hard reboot because it might brick itself according to some other forum post I have read.

    • So I have tried to gain access via a monitor/mouse/keyboard (via HDMI and USB) but that didn't work. I think you cannot gain this type of access on a running machine without a reboot. Can somebody confirm this?

    • Trying ssh from the internal network led to a connection timeout. Might be that I have disabled ssh but I cannot remember.

    • Also tried to connect a laptop to the dedicated 'console' port but nothing happened (= no network connection).
Not sure what should have happened anyway to be honest.

Any suggestion on what to do before I have to give it a hard reboot are greatly appreciated!

If you ran out of drive space... You'll get a server 500 error.

Ok so the two seem to be related.
But how to free up disk space without being able to login?

BTW: i meant disk space and not memory when I was talking about running out. Sorry for the confusion.

It'd be best if support got in there to look, but if you suspect reports filled the drive, this script and purge the reports data:

    https://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/...r_Reports_Data

Otherwise, reinstall the platform, and restore a configuration backup.

I would like to give this a try but how do I run this script if there is no way to access the unit?

You have to ssh to the internal interface.

Or, on the physical console open the terminal and type.

The root password is the admin web UI password. so you login root, and whatever that password is.

I tried but got a timeout. Will give it another try with a normal ssh client (before I tried ssh commands from a cmd box in win10)

Ok but how does this physical console work? You just plug network cable in? Connect a laptop? Get an (internal?) IP? And then what?
    (Foregive me my ignorance... )

If your device running Untangle has video out (VGA or HDMI port), connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to it.
