Unhappy Disk issue being reported under UT 6.1

I have a Dell R300 with hardware RAID-1 enabled and I am remotely installing UT 6.1 via Dell DRAC 5. After getting past the initial 'known' Splashy screen issue, I was able to get to the install page.

However, upon a reboot, I encountered an issue showing that sdb5 (/data/) was no longer valid and reported fsck errors. Just to be sure, I ran the Dell diagnostics to check the two drives and they both are without any bad blocks and functioning normally.

The weird thing was that under UT 6.0.2 this error never appeared. But upon re-imaging the system to UT 6.1, all of these problems are starting to appear.

    Exclamation Solution?

    Hi Michael,

Have you found a solution to this issue?

We're experiencing the same problems with Untangle 6.2.

With the limited specs I have on the R300 it looks like the onboard RAID is software driven, reconfigure the hard drives to SATA mode and use a single drive. The RAID feature probably isn't supported.

Strange? It worked fine in 6.02?

Per Untangle support, "Its a known issue and we're working to resolve it as soon as possible."

Why not test issues and provide factual support Rob?

Because I don't have infinite resources to own every hardware configuration on these forums.

The RAID controller in that unit is a bit of an unknown from a google search and the SATA/RAID onboard I see listed is a basic softRAID controller that doesn't work with linux outside of a normal SATA controller.

So Ok, I threw the option out there to give you something to try. Never mind that 6.02 was on a MUCH older linux OS. Nevermind that this information was free and volunteered on my part.

    Default similar problem ?

i just set up an older dell poweredge 650

rebooted and all of a sudden its complaining about /dev/hda5

fsck.ext3: no such file or directory blah blah blah while trying to open /dev/hda5

i can control-D and continue and the system seems fine ...

the only change i had made prior to this was to edit grubs menu.lst

i removed "splash" and replaced it with "pci=nommconf"

    goofy

    ---update---

i just took a look at the image posted - thats exactly whats going on with this system

this is a non raid box with a single 80 gig drive

    ?

Software RAID support has always sucked.
We still say not to use it. It may appear to work, but as you found out, it doesn't.

I want to chime in on the subject of software RAID. During a standard linux installation (text or graphical), you are presented with a prompt. At that prompt you can enter (among other things) "linux dd". If you feed linux a floppy disk with the software RAID driver(s) on it...the Untangle .iso installation does not present this opportunity.
