I will keep my home box at 7.1 until I'm forced to update then remove it all together. I put UT in place to hide and block ads.

    Default My Thoughts

I have concerns about ads streamed into my network from a third party but Spiceworks already does this. I have never had a problem with them.

Are you going to source (proxy) and screen the ads through your servers so we can be sure they are clean and a click won't result in ending up at some hijacked page full of porn or malware? I don't know if Spiceworks does this or not but it would seem to be a good step to ensureing users the steam is clean and secure.

I think Spiceworks accepts advertisers that are targeted at what thier users are interesting in and screen the ad vendors accordingly. I assume something similar is done here.

Putting the ads on the quarantine and reports page would be the next step I assume. This would generate more eye on the ads than the block pages probably.

    • Could we choose from categories of ads that our users may want to see?
    • Could our users rate ads as objectionable or as effective on a scale or X to X?
    • Could there be a nominal opt out fee that would cover the potential revenue you would gain with the ads? <edit> oh, branding manager. I see. </edit>

Thanks for a great product! You guys do deserve to make a buck or two here. Let's all put our heads together and see if we can help!!

    Default Another Idea?

What about a "Untangle, Sponsored By..." It gives me a warm fuzzy that you guys trust them enough to put your name on the ad. The ads are a much easier sell, Free = Ads... enough said.

I would be totally against tagging my email. I don't think this presents a good image for the company using the product. I know I would get an ear full from managment over that. It may or may not force them into paying for the product though at gun point. Also the tags expose a part of our security configuration to the world. I much rather see ads.

    Addressing security concerns:
Could Untangle screen and push the ads on a schedule like the virus sig updates? If this were the case I would feel better about it than if the ads were streamed directly from a 3rd party.

<edit> It is the click through that is more of a concern here I guess. That would still be a problem and UT has no control of the destination other than the filtering present in the device for the requested traffic.</edit>

btw, this would also subvert any attempt to block the ad. If you do block the ad updates then any updates to the web filter or virus sig files would also be blocked. You would also be stuck viewing the same ads over and over. Tie it all together. No ads no updates. Also if Untangle serves the ad it won't be blocked by itself.

I'm very happy with UT. We've got a paid bundle here and so don't see any of the ads being complained about, but generally on the Internet you don't get anything for free - there's always a catch somewhere. If I were using UT in a home or small business environment, the ads would definitely encourage me to buy at least One app if the ads were blocked with any purchase. It would be a small price to pay for a great product.

Anyone else detecting the fun similarities between this thread, and when Untangle made the branding manager a rack app to prevent the freeloaders? :P

    Hey my friend Rob,

I never thought you were going to take it that way... I honestly think that the people using the FREE Untangle can take some ads in the blockpages.
In our case, we don't really need to have the PAID version, but for all the $$$ we are saving in time not wasted by our employees having to delete spam or getting infected with viruses, spyware, etc, paying a subscription is a way to keep this project up and running.

I know a lot of people in this forum that CAN afford to pay a subscription but just don't do it because they can get it for free.

We are State Government, we don't have a lot of money, better said --> no money, but a couple of bucks invested in a project like this ... it pays by itself.

Just my 2 cents; I am not trying to say that other opinions here are wrong

I wasn't really complaining about the discussion here either. I was just pointing out that the same harsh feelings, the divide between needs and wants, and the dynamics of the discussion are all about the same as back when Untangle closed the branding manager hole.

Don't forget, back then anyone could use the branding manager if they knew the magic key strokes to get into it. So we had a forum full of people that were using that paid module for fee because they could.

Also, while things get a bit heated in a discussion like this. I want everyone to take a trip through the tread and look at where we started, vs where we are now. Threads like this are very harsh to deal with, they have possible negative impacts on the community and the product. Yet, at the end of each discussion of this kind, we're left with something that works.

Take a step out of this issue specifically and look at what just happened here from a geopolitical standpoint. Open Source works, and we just proved it, right here in this thread.

Now if only our government was so efficient...

I think the Untangle Sponsered by: <ad link> is a good idea. Helps keep someone from thinking their system is compromised.

We will likely add a "Support our Sponsors:" on "Untangle Sponsored by:" thing at some point. Only some ad networks allow this though, so we haven't added it yet just to make sure we don't break the rules.
