WEB dismal performance

I have T1 line 1.5Mbs down/up.
Without UT box everything goes smoothly , the problems starts when the UT is added to the mix.
We used to use Fortinet another WEB filtering solution and we did not had those issues, that box runs a risk 600Mhz processor go figure.
I think something gets missed by UT team is see that the success is 50/50 50% gets it working 50% does not.

It is really important that some of you understand how to configure the hosting PC not only to stream line it but get maximum performance and reliability.

1. PENT 4 (at least)
2. 2+Gig ram min
3. 60GB MIN
4. Two Nics with update drivers.
5. Basic Win XP SP3 + updates.
6. STOP/Disable any Windows Services not required!! you will find some believe me - fine tune it.
7. Turn off system restore it will hog memory and processor resources.
8. Set your PAGING SWAP FILE size don't let windows manage it at all.
9. Adjust your system performance settings.
10. Set UT SMTP scanning to LOW.

Just a few things to enhance your system.

I think your problem is not the hardware but the traffic you have.

Did you check if one or more computers on your network are deploying any type of attack, opening so many connections, to much DNS requests, spamming , so on ?

It will be good to start other modules (spyware block, Intrusion prevention, attack blocker or spam blocker) one at the time in log mode and check what is going on there.

Or, if you are skilled with it, do a tcpdump of one interface for five minutes and then upload it on a wireshark to analize.

why run windows for UT? That's soaks up 25% of your perforamce right there..use the linux iso. Then you only need 1 gig of ram and 1.5 ghz cpu and 40 gigs hdd. for his line rate(actually you could easily do 6 mbps on that box)

I'm running linux UT with 786MB RAM, Pentium 1.7, 40GB Hard drive and constantly seeing 100% CPU load with one client computer. I truly think the OP has a point.

Prior to this I running m0n0wall with 256MB on the same beatup Dell GX240 and it flies.

Are you running Protocol Blocker? If so, turn on logging for all P2P traffic and see what shows up. Also check your Attack Blocker for events.

try installing attack blocker if you havent, never leave home without it.

Trust me - you want Attack Blocker, unless you want your little box to crash whenever someone runs an nmap. But hey, what do I know?
