Has the Untangle appliance truly been around since 2002?

Whilst searching for something else, I came across this article: http://techrepublic.com.com/2346-1009_11-31228.html

I was very surprised to read about Metavize and the EdgeGuard Appliance.

Clearly, the Metavize EdgeGuard Appliance is what I know as the Untangle Appliance. There's even a press release on UT.com, http://www.untangle.com/About-Us/July-11-2005

Far out, I never knew this product has been around for so long. That's definitely an interesting history and worth a mention on http://www.untangle.com/About-Us/The-Untangle-Story

And it's definitely beneficial for the product to have a long history, 2002 is a respectable start date.

I searched the forums and found the occasional reference to Metavize, mainly in repo URLs.

Untangle is a great name, certainly better than Metavize.

I guess I'm the odd one... call me a pure geek but I could care less what a product is called. I work based on performance.. UT works.. so I use it.

Still it is interesting to see that this thing we all use is older than I gave it credit for... 2002... that would put UT into the category with the oldest UTMs on the shelf... Even the IBM Threatwall, that eventually became the eSoft Instagate, isn't that much older.

Note, the IBM Threatwall isn't to be confused with teh eSoft Threatwall... different product.
