    Default Rural home use?

I am looking to move into a more rural area, but also keep reliable/consistent throughput. I have stable fiber internet today, but the area that I am looking in only has DSL.

Would an SD-WAN appliance with DSL and LTE hotspot connectivity be a reasonable way to continue using an IP phone and online meetings?

I know a lot of this depends on the quality of the 2 connections - will SD-WAN improve this over the base experience?

For VOIP, you will need 5G cellular which is not currently supported on Untangle SDWAN appliance. Also SDWAN does not have any web filtering. I would recommend a z4w and a 5G cellular hotspot. The Untangle NGFW WiFi can be used as a WAN. Connect the NGFW WiFi to the hotspot as a WAN, then use WAN Failover & Balancer to automatically manage your connections.

So is the z4w using SD-WAN technology, or just connection management?

There are two separate products, NGFW and SDWAN. SDWAN is mostly useful with multiple satellite offices using a main filtering point. SDWAN is not useful in your case since you need a full firewall like NGFW.

The z4 is just hardware which runs NGFW.

Ok, would it be counter product or not even effective to run both?

Effective to use both? Certainly, just not on the same Internet connection.

SDWan's primary purpose is to enable inexpensive remote site access to a parent site running NGFW for filtration.
