does the virus module scan the network traffic that does not go out the external interface?
say through intranet or local traffic between machines?

Local Traffic between to machines on the same subnet will not be subject to any scanning from Untangle as they will do direct communication.
thank you, so i guess my next thing is to find a product that scans network traffic? or would that be to insane
The AV module does scan network traffic. Just only on specific protocols, and traffic that is passing through Untangle.
By default an HTTP session going from External to Internal is handled exactly the same if it's going from DMZ to Internal.

correct but lets say, one of my employees has a usb drive and a file is infected and he transfers it to another employee, what would stop that from getting on the network....besides the AV on the receiving party
That is the job of desktop AV.
I guess now that Untangle has broken the 10 port limitation... you could get one of my prototype servers with 24 ports on it and bridge them all to Internal. That'd make a basic Untangle "switch" that might be able to pull this off. lol
I warn you... configuring 24 ports is a PITA!
