Default anti-malware updates causing high load and killing traffic flow to/from the internet.

Started about 6 weeks ago on a bare metal install that's been running for years without issue, finally got some time to look at it, every load surge and traffic kill is at the same time as the anti-malware update as logged in the bdamserver log. This is before and after the 14 update, which was about 2 weeks ago. While watching the load surge the hd can be heard heavily working. Load is typically point 1, during the update it can surge to 15 and even 30 for about 5-9 minutes, this can be correlated between the load report and the bdamserver log time stamps.

    Any thoughts?
