Default WAN Fail Over Between 2 Untangle Boxes?

    Hi,

I'm getting back into using Untangle and let me say you guys have done an excellent job. The UI looks really good.

Is is possible to do WAN Failover between 2 Untangle Boxes on two separate VLANS? I know most appliances can do this with routing rules and probes but I was wondering if Untangle could do this as well?

EDIT: Perhaps a better way to ask this is...can Untangle do Routing Failover?

WAN failover is failing between two internet connections.

You mean redundancy? That is a different kind of failover, but yes you can accomplish that with VRRP.

Untangle's VRRP implementation creates servers that are masters and slaves. That is, one Untangle owns them all.

So, if you have a multiwan situation, you can have all of them acting as one virtual router, such that if one fails another takes over. But, because VRRP you need each router to have its own IP address in each network segment you attach it to, then you need another address in each segment that's going to be shared among the Untangles. Those shared addresses are what move among servers, and are what you use to communicate.

Perfect. Thanks for responding, I'll have to take a look at VRRP.

Is there a way to test if two Untangle Boxes are communicating VRRP information with one another? Other than testing a failover.

I guess you can just watch them communicate with tcpdump -n -i ethx proto vrrp

or you can check the status in the UI. If its not the master, then it knows the other master is up.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was like HSRP and showed which was Active and which was Standby, which are clear indications that it's working.

    Untangle marks the current master.
