Default Why is my sons iPad trying to goto captive.apple.com on my wifi when no other iPad is

    Hello,

I have setup a router to be a wireless AP point and all my devices connect to that. All the other wireless items are fine but my sons iPad for some reasons is trying to goto captive.apple.com and it cant because I have webfilter on to only allow select sites. I have read it is about wifi hotspots and captive portal. I dont have captive portal app installed in any of the racks as I have no need for it.

I dont understand why it would try and go out to this address all of a sudden. Then looking at the wifi setting it has a login option which none of the other ipads do.

I have tried forgetting the network on the ipad and rebooting but still no joy. I swear blind it had been all ok before as he could get to the site I had allowed without it asking for captive portal

    any pointers would be great
    thanks

Its probably just checking for a captive portal.

iOS uses an http request against apple.com somewhere to determine if it has connectivity, if that connection cannot be made, it assumes it's behind a captive portal.

This is an artifact of the web filtering you're doing, I'm not sure why it's not triggering on other iOS devices, because it should.

but why does it go out to apple to check for a captive portal and then not allow it to connect to my WIFI with that page blocked.

so do I just need to allow it access to apple which just seems plain wierd

ok I have looked in the reports and the others are going out to that site but they are not restricted on the filtering so its not bothered them

Would be nice to know why they heck I have to allow access to an apple site to connect to my wifi but I guess I wont know.

Thanks for the replies sky-night & dmorris

Compare this to the Untangle documentation for Web Filter and Windows reporting no Internet access to understand why:
Make sure you're not blocking access to the domain www.msftncsi.com; this is part of a test that Microsoft runs to see if there is an active internet connection. Once you've verified this domain is not blocked, simply restart the PC and that should take care of it.
iOS is designed to be helpful here given its assumption that you are trying to use a captive portal (the login option you mentioned). Regrettably, iOS can't know (and maybe shouldn't assume) that there is no captive portal involved.
