    Default Penthouse.com categorized as news

My untangle box thinks that penthouse.com is in the news category. When I suggest a new category it tells me "unable to submit suggestion, try again later". Where does Untangle get it's category lists and how in the world could they possibly think that the penthouse website is a news site? It's not like penthouse.com just popped up yesterday. Doesn't make me feel too confident in the filtering abilities.

Anyone else seeing this? How do we get in a request to have a site re-categorized?

That's odd the categorization differs. And suggestions still cannot be made.

EDIT: Must have been a temporary thing. Clearing the category cache fixed it. Maybe that explains why suggestions weren't being accepted--because the category data was stale?

Mine still just says news. I just noticed that it says I submitted a suggestion yesterday even though I received the failed message. I wonder if the suggestions are being submitted even though you get an error? How do you clear the categorization cache?

Ok, so I cleared the cache and now it says pornography, news. So what do I have to do now? Log into the 10 Untangle firewalls that I support and manually clear the cache? I restarted my personal Untangle before I posted this and that did not clear the cache. Is this a bug? If the web filtering is compromised because of stale cache then what are we supposed to do?

Yeah, that's exactly what I was seeing. To clear the category cache, go to the Advanced tab within the Web Filter app. At the bottom of the possibilities is a button labeled "Clear Category URL Cache." Although I didn't retest the suggestion capability, penthouse.com was categorized as expected.

Edit: Glad clearing the cache worked. I've never run across this before and I don't know how NGFW usually refreshes the cache. Clearly something is less than optimal here, though, so maybe one of the staff will help out.

Edit 2: The documentation says that "The cache automatically cleans itself as entries become old or stale, so [the clear cache button] is mostly for testing." But that's not how it worked in this case, at least not as fast as one would think it should, so it seems to me that something isn't quite right. Potentially this is a serious issue.

I guess I'll call tech support when I have time since no one from Untangle is going to chime in. It's very unnerving that we just caught Untangle not web filtering correctly. Web filtering and reporting is one of the main selling points in my opinion and now I have to call tech support because we've found a bug in multiple installations that keeps Untangle from filtering the most obvious porn site of them all. Thanks for your input Sam, unfortunately this isn't a "potential" issue, it's an immediate serious issue, and a security issue at that. If it's not filtering penthouse.com correctly then is it filtering malware sites correctly? Who knows?? And thats the problem, the entire filtering engine is suspect now.

I don't disagree with that, but perhaps there's an explanation that serves to point out this was a rare occurrence upstream and with the cache mechanism. But without any sort of explanation, you're right, it does mean the filtering engine is suspect. How can it mean anything else?

If/when you get around to talking with support, please let us know the outcome. If you don't get a reassuring explanation, I'll tweet this thread at Untangle. I like NGFW, but I do depend on it reliably working as expected.

The cache sounds to be working correctly.
Categorizations are cached - its not realistic (performance wise) to do a categorization lookup on every web request - each time you open your browser to common sites thats hundreds of requests. Your internet would crawl.

The categorization service sends at cache time with the response that tells the server to cache the result for some period of time.

There is no need to flush the cache manually - it automatically cleans itself. If you want to force it now, the button is there to do so.
