    Default Blocking site categories--proper setup

    Hi,

I just wrapped up a demo where I thought I had set up web filtering correctly, but obviously didn't. I need to get a handle on this before these folks come out again.

    Details:

I have a workstation with a static IP address that needs restrictions for a 'business' type environment: no porn, etc.

I defined a new Policy to cover that workstation and then loaded up the web filter with the blocked & flagged list of classifications.

The detail activity list shows the site I tested, with Blocked as False and Flagged as true, and reason for Action as In Site Block list (U). The Web Category is blank. The audit trail can be seen here. And to verify, I have the Pornography classification with both Blocked and Flagged checked on.

    What did I miss?

The screenshot doesn't show much, but it looks fine.

Are you debugging some issue? If you have an issue describe what you see and how its different than what you expected/wanted to see.

    Hi,

Yes it is different than what I expected. In this instance, I have Porn blocked per here. So I would have expected it to have been blocked as well as flagged.

    Oh I see.
There is something you added to the site block list saying that you only wanted it flagged.

Can you post a screenshot of your site block list?

edit: also for demo's with customers I would suggest playboy.com
Its still porn, but if you screw up your config or you accidently aren't actually behind Untangle or something (it happens) then the playboy.com homepage is actually just pg-13 and has much less shock factor in an office setting.

    Good suggestion!

A snapshot of that area on the category list is here.

I'm talking about the "Block Sites" tab

Oh hell. I had them flagged and not blocked. My bad. Not something I have to do very often.
Why blocked & flagged columns in the category list and repeated here?
FWIW, my entry there was :
    *.* Blocked unchecked, Flagged checked.

    Thanks much!

There is no need to specifically block them there.
If you blocked the whole Porn category they will get blocked.

You just need to use the site lists when you want to specifically treat a site differently than the whole category.

    example:
    block videos, except pass youtube
    pass news, but block cnn
    pass social media, block facebook

I'm not following. I now have:

ph5.jpg in the sites list. Is this going to kill everything for this workstation?

Or do I need to delete this rule entirely allowing the Category tab to take over?

In the Category tab I had blocked a long list of stuff but apparently didn't do it quite right.

Thats going to block all web requests.

Yes, I would remove this rule. You only need to explicitly block sites when they aren't otherwise blocked. If you block all sites it doesn't even matter what category they are.

You can read the order of operations on the help page.
