Did you see the crashes and memory problems we had with just the new engine being deployed? Making that worse isn't a great idea...

Baby steps... it may be frustrating, but it's a far safer process.

With NG Firewall 14.2, the category for "Piracy & Copyright Theft" is "Illegal". Some of the key categories that we've had customers ask about are
"Hate Speech": use "Hate and Racism"
    "Illegal Drugs": use "Abused Drugs"
"Malware Call Home", or "Malware Distribution Point": use "SPAM URLs" and "Bot Nets"
"Phishing/Fraud": use "Phishing and Other Frauds"

Here's an example where less categories is a benefit. With NG Firewall 14.2, an administrator dealing with children can simply block "Adult and Pornography", instead of having to block multiple categories as with previous releases in order to what they need. An administrator who wants to block Pornography, usually wants to block R-Rated content and other types of content along these lines for which there were many categories to block in previous releases. Less categories certainly does not mean that less URL's are categorized.

Here's a category mapping document that shows previous and new categories: Category Mapping

Oh, come on. Less is not more. Sounds like Untangle is taking a page out of airline spin departments trying to make a loyalty program devaluation sound good. The fact is that many things are paired together that might be better served separate. The fact is that many sites are miscategorized. The fact is that the filter is not as effective as Zvello. The fact is that many customers are highly disappointed in Untangle's decision and are considering jumping ship. Don't try to spin this as a positive.
