Default Policy Manager and Web Filter Lite

Can I use Policy Manager with Web Filter lite? I am trying to put together a good/inexpensive Internet filter for a client of mine to use at their home. They need to be able to have different Internet filter levels for parents vs. kids and possible even different levels from kid to kid.

My solution is to buy Policy Manager and use Web Filter Lite along with Captive Portal for user authentication. Can I get the desired result this way or do I need to purchase Web Filter as well? I don't think Web Filter subscription alone will allow different user levels will it?

As far as I'm aware, User authentication via the CP requires the directory connector, even if you aren't using AD you need that piece to deal with the local username -> IP address list Untangle actually uses to route traffic.

The policy manager can be used with any module freely. So Web Filter Lite, is an option. But if all you want to buy is the policy manager, you're going to end up needing to use IP reservations and IP level controls on your polices.

You can do CP with local directory, but you won't be able to create policies based on username without directory connector because thats what tracks the username->IP map.

If you just need it for web filtering, you can simply just add the parent's IPs to the pass list in web filter [lite] and they will be exempt from web filtering.

Policy Manager cannot use the local directory created by Captive Portal? Using IP based exceptions for a parent's computer might not work since I think that sometimes the computers are shared between parents and kids. I want a browser based authentication method if possible.

It is possible, but you'll need the directory connector, and the policy manager.
